The recently released Ontario Landscape Tree Planting Guide is one of the most comprehensive tree planting guides ever developed for use by the landscape industry across Canada and likely North America. The Guide is available to all user groups, including installers, designers, and specifiers. Join author Dr. Darby McGrath, to learn more about how this document was developed as well as the rationale for this new, unique format. This talk will explore The Guide which is comprised of summaries of up-to-date research and a series of corresponding field sheets that refines the information into actionable items.

Soil health is a term being talked about more and more by landscape professionals — and by the companies that provide products to the landscape construction and maintenance industry. This is an exciting new idea built on our growing understanding of the ancient relationship between plants and their soil environment; we will dig deep into this idea.

Rodger Tschanz, MSc | University of Guelph
This session will highlight the best performers from the perennial and annual trials in 2019. Both the ground bed and container trials will be covered. A special emphasis will be given to the results of the comprehensive Impatiens Downy Mildew trial that took place under a range of conditions which included research stations, public gardens and professionally maintained home landscapes.

Darby McGrath Darby McGrath, PhD | Vineland Research and Innovation Centre
Dr. Darby McGrath is the Program Lead for Greening the Canadian Landscape at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre and is the Research Scientist for Nursery and Landscape. Her work integrates nursery production research with ecological restoration principles to address challenges of urban tree survival.
Bob Reeves Bob Reeves | Root Rescue Environmental Products Inc.
Bob is the president and founder of Root Rescue Environmental Products. Some of Bob's career highlights include: lead developer and co-founder of DynaScape Landscape Design and Quotation Software; landscape designer, estimator and owner of Reevisions Landscape Designs; Co-owner and manager of the Nursery Livegoods and Landscape Design/Build divisions at Reeves Nursery in Woodbridge ON.
Rodger Tschanz Rodger Tschanz, MSc | University of Guelph
Rodger Tschanz has worked as a technician at the University of Guelph since 1989. In 2001, he was asked by the Department of Plant Agriculture to create and manage the University’s Ornamental Trial Garden program. The trial garden locations have expanded over the years to currently include ground bed trials in Guelph, Milton and the Royal Botanical Gardens as well as container trials in Guelph and, in 2019, at the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre. At the Guelph site, Tschanz is a judge for the annual and perennial entries of the All-America Selections organization. In addition to the Trial Garden duties, Tschanz is a technician for the ornamental plant breeding program in Guelph, teaches ornamental plant uses and identification, assists with the management of Plant Agriculture’s growth facilities and is part of the student liaison and undergraduate recruitment team for the Department of Plant Agriculture.
Roy Kuehn Roy Kuehn, BA, B.Ed. | Landsource Organix Ltd
Roy has a degree in Geography and Environmental Studies and a degree in Education. He has 33 yrs of experience in the landscaping industry and has managed maintenance divisions in landscape companies in British Columbia and Ontario. Roy is presently general manager at Landsource Organix, running a fleet of blower trucks in the GTA.
Jon L. Peter Jon L. Peter, OAC, NPD | Royal Botanical Gardens
Jon L. Peter has worked at some of the finest botanical institutions in North America and is currently Curator & Plant Records Manager at the Royal Botanical Gardens where he is responsible for the documentation, evaluation and management of plants throughout the gardens, which includes over 170,000 individual plants representing approximately 6,500 taxa (different types). Jon is also responsible for plant acquisition and discovering those under-utilized yet beautiful plants for the right spot in the gardens.
